Physical Education
Curriculum Intent
Reydon Primary School aims to provide a PE, school sport and physical activity (PESSPA) offer that allows all children from Reception to Year 6 to experience a range of activities and sports that helps them to develop their physical health, fitness and wellbeing. We intend to offer a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. We want our children to recognise that PESSPA not only develops their bodies physically but encompasses the development of the whole child. It embeds values, such as honesty, determination and respect, as well as skills, such as communication, team work, measuring and self-reflection on individual and collaborative performance. Children will develop their physical literacy throughout primary school to become competent, confident and healthy movers at an early stage. We want children to develop a positive relationship with physical activity and sports, to build their motivation, confidence, physical competence and understanding of movement. We want to provide them with the better grounds to nurture and sustain their lifelong love and participation in physical activity and sport and know how to lead healthy, active lives.
Curriculum Implementation
At Reydon Primary School, all children receive two hours of high-quality PE lessons a week. These are taught by our specialist PE coach from Premier Sports and class teachers. We follow the National Curriculum programme of study for PE to ensure all children reach the end of Key Stage points, including swimming.
Premier Sports is used for planning, delivery and assessment of lessons to ensure all children are progressing within each lesson/ topic and through the year groups. Our personalised long-term plan ensures all year groups are taught a variety of topics/sports across the year. Skills are continually revisited and built upon across a wide range of focused activities and sports. In Early Years and Key Stage 1, topics focus on developing the fundamental movement skills. These are built upon in Key Stage 2 where such skills are applied to sports. We want children to have the opportunities to experience a broad range of sports to foster interests and encourage them to attend community clubs outside of school, as well as develop their physical literacy and leave primary school keen and excited to continue playing sports and try new ones in secondary school and later life.
Reydon Primary School works in partnership with the Active Learning Trust and North Suffolk Sports Partnership to attend non-competitive and competitive sports events, such as orienteering, Bee Netball and transition sessions for Year 6 at secondary schools.
Swimming
As part of the National Curriculum, all children are expected to leave primary school with the knowledge and skills necessary to swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, using a range of strokes effectively, and performing safe self-rescue in different water-based situation.
All children in Year 4 complete weekly lessons in the Spring term at the Waveney Valley Leisure Centre, Bungay. At the end of the series of lessons, children are assessed against the aims and are awarded a certificate to celebrate their progress. We want all our children to become safe, confident swimmers when swimming with family and friends in different situations so any additional opportunities to practise their skills outside of school (at all ages) really helps.
Curriculum Impact
By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the content specified in the relevant programme of study. At Reydon, we use summative assessment to determine children’s understanding and inform teachers’ planning. Each part of the PE curriculum is reviewed on a termly basis by the subject leader.
In September, our Year 5 and 6 Sports Leaders completed a training day delivered by North Suffolk Sports Partnership. At lunchtimes, the leaders run a range of games and activities to increase children’s physical activity, develop their skills and to have fun.
Premier Sport run a range of exciting, fun after-school clubs including dodgeball, football and gymnastics. These popular clubs give children the opportunity to develop their interests, skills and enjoyment with children from different year groups.
